Why is it called the Janus Project?

Janus is extracted from ancient Roman mythology. He was popularly represented with two faces facing opposite directions.

The name "Janus" was chosen for this project because the god's plurality was thought to best symbolize the world's diverse socio-political landscape and visually represents a meeting of minds.

Roman mythology holds that Janus represents the transition between primitive life and civilization, chaos and order, war and peace.

Janus introduced of the system of the years, the changing of the seasons, the ups and downs of fortune, and the civilization of the human race by means of agriculture, industry and the arts.

Janus brought the people a time of peace and welfare. He introduced money, cultivation of the fields, and the laws. Janus was the orchestrator of all things, and of all enterprises. He began things and ended things.

In his left hand he held a key to show that he opened shut all things, and in his right hand he carried a long virgate rod with which he controlled all undertakings and their progress.

The doors of his temple were kept open in times of war so he would be ready to intervene when necessary. In times of peace the doors were closed.

The month of January is named after Janus.

Who owns the Janus Project?

The Janus Project intellectual property is owned by the International Janus Committee Ltd. (IJC), a company limited by guarantee in Australia.

The IJC has commissioned Advocation LLC, a limited liability company in Virginia USA, to set up a 501c3 non-profit organization to control of the Janus Project internationally from Washington DC in the USA.

Adam Davidson, the creator of the Janus Project, is a director of the IJC in Australia and and a shareholder of Advocation LLC in the USA.

How, when and where did the Janus Project originate?

The concept of a world summit for "a peace without victory", originated with Adam Davidson in 1985, in Sydney Australia.

The concept was developed by Mr. Davidson and his network of associates from The Scots College, Sydney, Mitchell College, Bathurst, and working peers among in the commercial media and communication arts academic spaces.

The Janus Project has been driven under two public companies limited by guarantee. The Janus Foundation International Ltd and the International Janus Committee Ltd.

The Janus Foundation International Ltd was created in June 1991 as a nonprofit organization. The founding members of Janus had backgrounds in public relations, legal, accounting, marketing, television, journalism and performing arts.

From 1991 to 1993, the N.E.W.S. World Summit event was shaped following meeting with key officials at the (UNDPI) United Nations, New York, Intelsat, Washington, and religious academics in the USA.

An early proposal along these lines was made in 1993, to UNDPI for the UN's 50th Anniversary celebration in 1995.  It was rejected on the grounds that the UN Secretariat is not mandated to initiate or support projects that involve commercial enterprises and mix individuals with the affairs of state of UN Members.

Since 1995, the Janus Project was refined to emphasize the political, commercial and social interests of all participants while accommodating the sensitivities of the dominant religious groups and global institutions like the United Nations and its system of organizations.

Throughout this process, the Janus Project sought political, broadcast, entertainment, and NGO executives and professionals and opinion leaders for event format, government lobbying and operational costs advice from key Olympic Games exetutives from Sydney Australia.

Feedback from religious leaders has also helped frame how the Janus Project could be symbolically relevant to the major cultural religious groups.

In May 2000, the Janus Project proposal was submitted to the world via the Internet. A
number of key people where sourced to form a "Brains Trust" to promote the project to targeted individuals and governments.

In late 2004, Adam Davidson, the prime administrator of the Janus Project, moved from Sydney Australia to Washington DC.

The task at hand then, and now again, is to gain the interests of governments and their Heads of State or Heads of Government, the media, corporations, and of course, individuals - the world's real base of power.

Complementary Statements of Clarification

The United Nations and the Janus Community

The Janus Project International is an organization whose mission is to intervene in international affairs by enlisting the voices of citizens in all nations and recruiting the support of opinion leaders and experts into the Janus Community.  As such, it may be perceived to compete with the United Nations.  To the contrary!  While it is true that the United Nations gathers the world's national governments together to discuss, highlight and deal with issues of international concern, the Janus Community unites the world's individuals together with commercial partners and NGOs to recognize, invest and participate in successful operating solutions to common challenges.  Janus Project is designed to, and will, enhance the work of the UN System of Organizations by connecting individuals and commercial resources to the efforts and goals of the UN System of Organizations and their existing and new NGO partners regardless of international borders.

The Internet and the Janus Project

The Internet is a powerful communication vehicle for freedom and self expression.  It is growing fast but it is still in its infancy as an international medium.  While filtered by the State in some parts of the world, it still operates without any structure or control - and it should.  The Internet (where available) provides individuals disparate power to express their varied opinions in any number of world forums.  In contrast, the Janus Project channels the publics' energy to affect change by highlighting the common challenges and rewarding successful solutions by investing in their expansion and development throughout the world.  The Internet is a part of the Janus Project's communication resources, along with newspapers, radio and television.

Existing Global Event Properties plus the N.E.W.S. World Summit

Periodic international broadcast events on the international calendar are dominated by the sporting world.   Each one contributes to and satisfies the world's desire for competitive excellence, and attracts huge audiences, commercial sponsors and television advertising.  Where the sport events display humanity's brawn, the Janus Project demonstrates the human brain. World athletic broadcast events occupy periods lasting anywhere between 16 days, for the Olympics, to 42 days, for the FIFA and Rugby World Cups.  The Janus Project's N.E.W.S. World Summit broadcast needs only seven days.  While the Olympic Games and the World Cups gather national athletes together to reward the world's best every four years, the Janus Project gathers national innovators and solutions providers and rewards the world's best each year.
